Allegan County seeks increase with senior millage renewal

Virginia Ransbottom, Staff Writer

Ballot language for a senior millage renewal that includes a new additional millage of .196 mills was approved by Allegan County Commissioners Thursday, April 24.

The senior citizen services millage proposal asks voters for a levy of .436 mills (per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of four years.
The previous millage levied .24 mills for four years and is expiring. The millage in 2011 was approved by voters with 11,705 yes votes to 5,498 no votes.
If approved, the .436 levy would raise an estimated $1,819,446 for services to senior citizens in the first calendar year of the levy based on taxable value.
County administrator Rob Sarro said the Council on Aging has been utilizing the fund balance amount to meet demands.
