Helen Marie (Wagner) Stodola, 92
Helen Marie (Wagner) Stodola, 92, of Libertyville, Ill., formerly of Allegan and Big Rapids, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2014, at the Winchester House. Helen was born on Sept. 5, 1921, in Adrian, to Herbert F. and Margaret A. (Vere) Wagner. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1939 and from Cleary College in Ypsilanti in 1940. After graduation, she worked as a secretary for Williamson & Ready, a legal firm in Monroe for 10 years. She was married to Joseph E. Stodola on July 26, 1947, at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. He preceded her in death on Nov. 30, 1995. After her children were in school, she worked in retail clothing sales in downtown Big Rapids, including several years as manager of the Mary-O Shoppe. When she was young, Helen loved to go dancing with her friends to the live music of big bands. Throughout her life, she enjoyed needlecrafts and reading, and was an avid and excellent bridge player. She also enjoyed playing other card games and games of chance, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and spending time with friends and family-especially her grandchildren. She volunteered for many years at American Red Cross blood banks in Big Rapids. In addition to her husband Joe, Helen was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law David M. Lemmen. Survivors include daughter Nancy Lemmen (and husband Mark Hansen) of Grayling, son Mark Stodola (and wife Sally) of Mundelein, Ill.; son Michael Stodola (and wife Christine) of Jenison; grandchildren, Michael, Jeffrey, Joseph and Lauren; and great grandchildren, Tyler and Anneliese. A memorial service will be Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Pastor Jerena Keys officiating. Helen Stodola's children and grandchildren look forward to greeting friends and other family members at the funeral home in the hour prior to the service.
