Five county divers qualify for state finals
It’s not the mistake that matters, but how you recover that counts is probably the attitude Allegan junior diver Erin Isola took with her to the regional competition on Thursday, Nov. 14, in the East Grand Rapids High School pool. Isola topped the regional competition for the regional 11-dive title.
Just six days earlier, Isola bombed her opening dive in the conference competition and had to work hard to make up the lost ground to finish runner-up to her teammate Brianna Price who won the conference title. Price finished third in the regional competition so both divers will be heading to the state competition at Eastern Michigan University Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21-22.
To keep herself in check emotionally during the regional competition, Isola chose a different approach than the one she took during the conference competition.
“I just decided to treat the meet like a practice,” Isola said. “So the meet was no big deal and it kind of calmed me down so the dives didn’t matter.”
But the dives did matter and she managed to pull off a huge total during the meet winning with a 462.9 score. She got on a roll and just kept on going.
“I hit an exceptional 1.5 back and then a 2.5 tuck that was really good,” she said. “The 1.5 was my fourth dive after the three compulsory dives. This was the first voluntary dive and the last three are also voluntary so these are the higher difficulty ones and I felt I hit each one.”
