The homer-happy softball team from Vestaburg defeated a determined Martin squad 12-0 in a Division 4 regional opener on Saturday, June 7. The mercy-rule-shortened five-inning game was played at Holton High School.
Janelle Rons of Vestaburg set the tone for the day in the top of the first inning with a mammoth three-run bomb that cleared the tall center field scoreboard by an estimated 20 feet.
“That was a school record 10th home run of the season for Janelle,” pointed out Wolverine coach Dan Rons.
The homers gave Vestaburg 29 long balls for the season.
“They hit the ball hard,” said Martin coach Gordon Ash of the state sixth-ranked team, which improved to 26-8.
Janelle Rons, who has 19 career dingers, and Hayley Johnson split the pitching duties for the Wolverines and combined to keep the Clippers off the scoreboard.
“They did a good job,” Ash said of the Vestaburg pitching duo, which combined for 10 strikeouts on the day and limited Martin to six hits.
