Senior-led Tigers claim regional tennis championship

Alyssa Hopkins couldn’t hold back her emotions.
In her final opportunity to do so, the Allegan senior teamed with sophomore Reannon Rizqallah at No. 3 doubles to win the regional flight championship that had previously eluded her.
“It was a very special day,” Allegan coach Jen Aldrich said after Hopkins and Rizqallah defeated Holland Christian’s Mackenzie Weener and Lauren Balder 6-2, 6-2. “Alyssa had tears of joy in her eyes. This has been a goal of hers for a long time.”
The win at third doubles was one of seven flight titles won by the Tigers, who finished with 31 points to claim the regional championship on Friday, May 16.
Holland Christian was second with 24 points, followed by Hamilton at third (15) and Wayland at fourth (seven). Otsego tied for fifth with Zeeland West (six points), while Plainwell was seventh with five points.
