Weber earns All-State for third time as Vikings place 13th
After missing All-State honors by less than six seconds as a freshman in 2011, Hopkins’ Rachael Weber accomplished the feat as both a sophomore and junior.
She now has three straight All-State performances to her credit.
Competing in the Division 3 girls’ cross country state finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, Nov. 1, Weber posted a time of 19:37 that was good for 24th place.
All-State recognition goes to the top 30 finishers.
Weber, who finished 14th as a sophomore and eighth as a junior, was hampered by injuries as of late that may have slowed her down somewhat.
“She’s been dealing with sore shins,” Hopkins coach Brook Brenner said of Weber. “Still, she ran very competitively and earned All-State honors for the third year in a row.”
With Weber leading the way, the Vikings put together a team finish of 13th among the 28-team field with 321 points.
Ithaca won the state title with 147 points, followed by Shepherd with 158 and Manistee with 163.
And while that finish represented a dropoff from the fourth-place showing turned in by the Vikings a season ago, Brenner was far from disappointed.
“My goal for them was to be in the top half and they were,” Brenner said. “It was a very windy and cold day, so that hurt their times a little bit But most of them were close to their season bests anyway.”
