After receiving the Educator of the Year award, Wings of Hope Hospice executive director Theresa Lynn had the opportunity to be interviewed by a Hospice & Palliative Care Association of Michigan representative for a video that will play the night of the awards dinner.

Wings of Hope Hospice director receives statewide award

Wings of Hope Hospice executive director Theresa Lynn has been named the winner of the 2014 Educator of the Year Award by the Hospice & Palliative Care Association of Michigan.

The staff of Wings of Hope nominated Lynn for the award.
“It was definitely a surprise,” Lynn said. “I had no idea they were doing this.”
Betty Jo Ferry, director of development and human resources, and Daryl DeHuff, director of clinical services, had decided to secretly nominate Lynn for Educator of the Year.
Ferry said Lynn is very deserving of the award.
“Not only is she being educated, but she promotes education with everyone else,” Ferry said. “It is so refreshing to see, especially at a nonprofit, because education comes with a cost; but she is very proactive.”
Lynn is working on her PhD in interdisciplinary health science at Western Michigan University while simultaneously teaching an online class called “Understanding Grief & Loss” for the university’s holistic health program.
The Association for Death Education and Counseling certified Lynn in thanatology—the study of death, dying and bereavement—earlier this year.
Lynn also led several workshops on advanced directives—documents specifying an individual’s end of life wishes—and set up a death cafe, which is a place for people to gather and discuss death.
Ferry said Lynn is always looking for ways to improve herself and the organization.
“She is a trendsetter,” Ferry said. “I’ve never seen anybody like her, who is constantly teaching other people and is still teaching herself. She has the agency’s best interests at heart and does everything she can to make us the best.”
Lynn is being honored at the Hospice & Palliative Care Association of Michigan’s gala and awards ceremony Tuesday, May 20, during the association’s annual conference.
