Driver jailed after car crash west of Allegan injures state worker

VALLEY TWP.—A Portage man was seriously injured Monday, March 31, in car crash at the intersection of 43rd Street and 118th Avenue.

Benjamin Woodward of Portage received serious injuries in the crash, according to the Allegan County Sheriff Department.

Police stated Woodward, who works for the State of Michigan Child Protective Services and was driving his state vehicle, was driving on 118th Avenue at about 11:22 a.m. when his car was struck on the driver side by a pickup driven by a 32-year-old.

Police stated Woodward had to be extricated from the wreck. They said their investigation found the pickup truck driver failed to yield the right of way and was driving faster than the 55 miles per hour speed limit. The truck, police stated, also have multiple defects that inhibited it from stopping safely.

The driver, whose name was not released pending his arraignment on reckless driving causing serious injury charges, was taken to the Allegan County Jail.
