Hamilton man killed when SUV strikes his motorcycle
FILLMORE TWP.—Michigan State Police said they arrested a 32-year-old Holland woman after she drove drunk in the early morning crash that killed Ronald Freeman, 47, of Hamilton.
According to state police, Freeman was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle south on 48th Street in Fillmore Township, followed by the woman who was driving a Land Rover SUV about 12:50 a.m. early Sunday, April 17.
The initial police investigation shows that both motorcycle and Land Rover failed to stop at the 142nd Avenue stop sign near the unincorporated community of Overisel. Just past the intersection, police said the SUV hit the back of the motorcycle, throwing Freeman off, and then ran off the road.
Freeman was flown to Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids by AeroMed but died of his injuries at the hospital. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.
Police said they believe alcohol helped caused the crash and the woman was arrested and later arraigned on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing death.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, Holland AMR ambulance and the Overisel Fire Department helped state police deal with the crash.
