Harry McDaniel installs new kinetic sculpture on Allegan's Riverfront Plaza

Allegan’s newest addition to its Riverfront Plaza gleamed in the morning sun as it was assembled Friday, July 1, by its creator, Asheville, N.C., artist Harry McDaniel.
The sculptor’s 17-foot-tall aluminum creation was commissioned by the Allegan Area Arts Council, the city’s Downtown Development Authority and the Delano Foundation. The three split the $18,000 commission equally.
Arts council member Paula Mintek spearheaded the effort and said the arts council hopes to add more public art along the riverfront in the long-term.
Above, McDaniel explains his inspiration for the work. The hollow structure has several moving pieces, each of which weigh only between 10 and 40 pounds.
