Hopkins schools selects Gary Wood to lead district

Virginia Ransbottom, Staff Writer

Hopkins Public Schools board of education has offered Gary Wood the superintendent position.

Wood, the current superintendent of Mio AuSable Schools, met with the search firm Monday, May 26, to go over a contract and reached a tentative agreement to accept the position pending board approval. Wood has been the Mio superintendent since January 2010 and has been doing double duty as the elementary principal since July 2011. His contract there is for $103,000 annually.
“The board has approved his hiring, but hasn’t signed or confirmed a decision,” said Hopkins schools business manager Katy Jager. “He fit the profile of what we wanted in a candidate and met the best leadership style to fit the district.”
In a special meeting on May 21, three candidates were interviewed from an original pool of 26. In a 5-2 vote of the board to hire Wood, Mike Maule and Karen Ryan voted to hire Kevin Kruger, a high school principal for Montague Public Schools. Later, however, Maule and Ryan reached consensus with the board and returned a 7-0 vote to offer Wood the position.
The school board’s planning session Monday, June 2, at 5:30 p.m., has been changed to a special meeting. The superintendent contract is expected to be on the agenda.
