Local districts offer winter activities for the public
Local districts throughout the county are offering ways to stay active and keep warm throughout the cold weather season.
Hamilton Community Schools offers pool and walking facilities throughout the winter.
Community members are invited to walk on the high school’s indoor track for free during school hours—7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Walkers must come to the main office, sign in and get a visitor’s badge.
Gym classes occasionally use the indoor track, at which time it is unavailable to walkers.
Hamilton’s pool activities include water aerobics, senior water aerobics, lap swim and open swim.
Lap swim is offered Monday through Friday from 5:45 to 7:45 a.m., school days from 11 a.m. to noon and during open swim at a cost of $2 per person.
Senior water aerobics takes place Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 to 9 a.m. and costs $2 per person.
Water aerobics is offered Monday and Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $3 per person.

Hopkins Public Schools offers indoor walking at both the high school and middle school.
Community members are invited to walk the high school halls from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m., and the middle school halls from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Martin Public Schools do not offer certain walking times; however, administrative assistant to the superintendent Chris Blauvelt said walkers are allowed to set up times to come.
“If it is prearranged with us we can allow them to come in and walk,” she said.

Otsego Public Schools community education director Marcia Hukill said the district offers pool, weight room and gym activities to community members.
A co-ed volleyball drop-in league also takes place Tuesday nights at the middle school gym.
Otsego’s pool offers lap swim, open swim and aqua aerobics.
Lap swim runs Monday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. The cost is $2 per adult with prices varying for seniors, students and families.
Open swim runs each Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the same price as lap swim.
Aqua aerobics takes place each Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $3 for adults with different pricing available for seniors and college students for this adult-only event.
Otsego High School’s indoor track and weight room will open to the public through spring break.
The upstairs amenities will be open Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Use of the track is free but there is a $2 cost to use the weight room.

Plainwell Community Schools is offering places for residents to walk and swim this winter according to community education’s Diane Slater.
The district offers open and lap swimming throughout the week.
Morning lap swimming is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7 a.m., noon lap swimming takes place from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and evening lap swimming takes place Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. Lap swimming costs $3 per person.
Open swimming is offered Friday and Saturday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Cost is $3 per person or $5 per family.
Cold weather walking is available in the Hicks Street Gym free of charge.
Adult-only walking occurs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Family walking is Tuesday and Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m.
“We want to let people get out of the house and give them a dry place to run or walk,” Slater said.
Lifelong Fitness takes place at Hicks Street Gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. The group is free but participants must register by calling Kathy Russell at (269) 685-0700.

Wayland Union Schools offers hall walking, open swim and lap swim to those wanting to stay active through the winter,
Wayland Middle School is open Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. for free hall walking.
Open swim is offered Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Adult lap swim—for individuals 16 and older—takes place Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7:20 a.m. and Saturday from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
Per day cost for pool activities is $3 for adults and $2 for senior citizens and non-resident students. Monthly pool memberships are available.
