Charles "Chuck" Wheaton Higgins Sr., 89
Charles "Chuck" Wheaton Higgins Sr., 89, passed away Feb. 9, 2015, at Shell Point in Fort Myers, Fla., where he lived for the past 15 years. He was born to Oswald and Helen Wheaton Higgins on Feb. 15, 1925, in St Louis, Mo.
Chuck graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1943, and later from the University of Michigan while in the Marine Corps.
On June 26, 1946, he married the love of his life, Helen Corlett. He became a 1st Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and was called back into duty during the Korean War in 1951.
He and Helen raised a family in River Forest, Ill., and spent summers on the Douglas lakeshore. He worked for Montgomery Ward in Chicago for 36 years as a retail executive, retiring in 1982 to spend winters on Sanibel Island, Fla.
Chuck is survived by his wife Helen; four children, Charlie (Abby) Higgins, Beth Ramsson, Tom (Lucy) Higgins and Cathy (Tom) Kamm; nine wonderful grandchildren; and three adorable great-grandchildren.
He had a love for the outdoors-swimming, sailing, tennis, golf-and enjoyed acting, volunteering and writing, with two novels published. He was the life of a party, made each person feel special and was dearly loved by all.
