Barbara Jean Hough, 88
Mrs. Barbara Jean Hough, 88, of Grand Rapids went to be with the Lord and Savior Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016. She was born in Butterworth Hospital when it was only the West Wing.
Barbara was an only child born to parents, Bernard N. Bartz and Fannie Rector Bartz. They preceded her in death. She was married to Clarence E. Hough for 33 years, he preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Michael Miller; and her granddaughter's father, James Westin.
She is survived by her children, Norma Miller of Victorville, Calif., Sandra Westin of Fairfax, Calif., Keith E. (Claudia) Hough of Allegan; five grandchildren she loved so much, Jennifer Westin (Andrew) Loschert, Sara Westin, Brian Hough, and twins Kevin Hough and Kelly (Katie) Hough; the new joy of her life, four great-grandchildren, Kendall Marie Hough, Keegan Thomas Hough, Westin Gray Loschert and Tucker Clarence Loschert; three step-grandchildren, Michelle (Darrel) Williams, Mark Miller and Steve Bowerman; eight step-great grandchildren, Ryan, Nolan, McKenna, Hanna, Mason, Gregory, Ricki Grace and Kylee.
Barbara and her parents moved to Allegan in 1937. She returned to Grand Rapids in 1980. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Allegan for 42 years, where she assisted with the nursery, Sunday school and taught Bible school.
She graduated from Allegan High School and became a Certified Nurse Aide at Allegan General Hospital where she volunteered for four years, working on the floor and X-ray department. She also started volunteering at Fulton Manor in 2000 for eight years.
She met new friends bowling at Northgate. In 1984 she joined the Northview Seniors. She enjoyed being the chairman of many luncheons through the years. She traveled all the day trips and overnights and really loved the friendship of many dear people. She still served on the Plainfield Township, Senior Neighbors Advisory Board.
She was a true friend to many and had a great sense of humor. Probably because she was a 1950s polio victim, she had much compassion for others with illnesses and handicaps. She always said her mother showed her the way and taught her well.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec, 21, at 12 noon, at North Park Presbyterian Church, 500 North Park St. NE., Grand Rapids. Her family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to North Park Church or Northview Senior Center.
