Clifford Asbel (MarinaMan), 69

Clifford Asbel (MarinaMan), 69, passed away suddenly in St. Barts in the West Indies on Jan. 4, 2019.

Cliff is survived by his mother Gloria Asbel. He is also survived by his daughter Nerine Asbel and son Malachi Asbel who live in Hawaii.

Cliff’s love for sailing and boating began while attending the University of Michigan. His first adventure was aboard a 27-foot sailboat that he sailed down the Mississippi to the Bahamas. He spent over 5 years in the Caribbean aboard his second boat, a 36-foot Hinckley named “Mantra,” providing day charters in St. Barts to a most selective clientele.

He sailed the length of the Caribbean Island chain and crossed the Atlantic twice. Like most serious mariners, Cliff dreamed of exploring the vast Pacific Ocean and lived that dream for 6 years, transiting the Panama Canal, sailing to the Philippines, Tahiti and back to Seattle.

Cliff dedicated his working career to the marine industry. His vast experience and success working in boatyards, as well as for boat builders, gave him the skills to own his own yacht service management company “MarinaMan, LLC” located in South Haven and Douglas, from 1989 to 2013.

After receiving his RYA Yachtmaster Ocean certification, Captain Cliff skippered a 68-foot Swan sailboat named “Simple Harmony,” sailing it between Newport, R.I. and St. Barts for the past 5 years.

Cliff’s love of life, dedication to his family and friends, along with all of those mariners he helped throughout his life will be missed, but not forgotten.

“At sea, I learned how little a person needs, not how much”
