Elaine J. Wood, 91

Elaine J. Wood, 91, of Webster, N.Y., died April 4, 2016.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne Thomas and Eva Porter Merchant; husband Donald E. Wood; infant brother Kenneth Leo Merchant; and niece Nancy Shaffer Jacobs.  
She is survived by children, Wayne (Linda) and Cherie Wood; grandchildren, Andrew (Amy) Wood, Lori (David) Hill and Alice Wood; three great-grandchildren; sister Beverly Shaffer; brother Virgil Merchant; and nieces and nephews, Janet Smith, Connie Brooks, Denise Medemar, Julie Fell and Joel Merchant.
Elaine grew up in Allegan, surrounded by loving family. As a young woman, she worked at the Allegan Bank, then colored photos for Van Melle Studios, including the photo above.
In 1945, she married Allegan resident Donald Edward Wood. Donald worked at Blood Brothers. During this time, son Wayne Allen was born. In 1958, the family moved to Rochester, N.Y., where Don became editor and publisher of Automatic Machining Magazine. Daughter Cherie was born in New York.
Elaine completed her Masters-Plus degree in Speech and Hearing. She became a language specialist, several courses short of her Doctorate. She changed many children's lives, helping them to read and speak easier.  
Elaine had a love of family history and published two genealogy books. She was an active member of Allegan Baptist Church and then Northridge Church in Rochester, N.Y..
A graveside service will be Wednesday, April 13, at noon at Oakwood Cemetery in Allegan.
