Ruth Virginia Tupper Washburn, 97
Ruth Virginia Tupper Washburn, 97, died peacefully in her sleep at her farm on Thursday Nov. 20, 2014.
Ruth was a member of the League of Women Voters, the AFS Exchange Student Program and the Ladies Library Club of Wayland. She was the founder and leader of the Great Decisions Foreign Policy Group in Wayland, on the Vestry at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Allegan, a volunteer reader in her 80s at the Steeby Elementary School, and one of the first inductees into the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame.
She was a social worker and later on in her career was the psychometrician for the Flossmoor Schools. She was also an avid bird watcher, reader, and gardener.
Ruth was born on Dec. 29, 1916, to Solon and Mary (Phinney) Tupper. She received her bachelor's degree from Albion College in 1937 and her master's degree in 1938 in social work from Bryn Mawr College.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Donald A. Washburn.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Donald J. Washburn (Wendy) of Mt. Druitt, Australia, Mary Suphan (Robert) of Kailua, Hawaii, Andrew Washburn (Joy) of Kentwood and Melissa Washburn of Lansing; her exchange student son Dr. Ben Aldan (Margaret) of Saipan; and her grandchildren, Annie, Alan, Beth, Susan, Jane, Judith, Mark, Stephen, TJ, Vincent and Kai.
A memorial service will be at a later date.
