The Little Guys Invitational at Gobles turned out to be quite the record-setting event for the Saugatuck track program.
The Indians set three new school records en route to winning both the boys’ and the girls’ championships.
The Saugatuck girls, who accounted for two of the school records, finished with 193.5 points to outdistance runner-up Delton by 70.5 points. The Saugatuck boys ended up with 151.5 boys, while Delton was second with 107.
Thea Johnson had a hand in both of the school records set by the girls’ team, one as an individual and one as part of a relay team.
Her individual record came in the 800-meter run, as she posted a time of 2:18.29. She also was part of the 1,600 relay team along with Kyrah Rodriguez, Kierstyn Stoin and Lily Francis that put together a record time of 4:11.13.
In addition to those two events, the Saugatuck girls won eight other events: Stoin in the 400 (1:02.18); Paisley Sipes in the 1,600 (5:20.67); Megan Jenkins in the 3,200 (12:27.57); the team of Francis, Hannah Howard, Taylor Hebert and Rodriguez in the 400 relay (54.20); the team of Howard, Abby Hartgerink, Stoin and Hebert in the 800 relay (1:54.87); the team of Johnson, Sipes, Jenkins and Francis in the 3,200 relay (9:47.88); Natalie Beckman in the discus (99-09); and Sydnie Avery in the pole vault (10-02).
The Saugatuck girls also had six runner-up finishes and six third-place showings.
The Indian boys’ team, meanwhile, set a school record in the 3,200 relay as the team of Corey Gorgas, Zach Pettinga, Nick Butch and Orlando Carrion ran a 8:09.63.
The boys’ team also picked up four additional wins, with three of them in individual events and one in another relay.
All three individual wins came in field events, with Brad Dunn winning the 110 hurdles (16.59), Xavier Cardona winning the shot put (47-09) and Evan Hotary winning the pole vault (13-00).
The other winning relay team was the 400 team of Jeff Kohlmeyer, Cole Hartman, Connor Carper and Sam Putzke (46.06).
The Saugatuck boys also placed second in five events and third in three events.
