Otsego rallies in final quarter to secure win over Vicksburg
Will Eldred and Jaxen Callaway formed quite the connection for Otsego in its Wolverine Conference football showdown with Vicksburg on Friday, Sept. 21.
Callaway hauled in eight passes from Eldred for a total of 115 yards.
And no reception was bigger than the final one.
With Otsego trailing 21-16, Eldred found Callaway for an 8-yard touchdown with 42 seconds left to play to provide the winning points in a 22-21 comeback victory.
“This was a great comeback win for our team,” Otsego coach John Kubiak said. “The defense played well all night and we made some plays offensively late in the game.”
Even after Otsego took its late lead, Kubiak and his players still weren’t able to breath easily.
A reception from Vicksburg’s Jacob Conklin to Chase Myers led to a field-goal attempt with four seconds left to play. But the kick missed its mark, sealing the win for Otsego.
“I was proud of the kids and how they handled adversity throughout the game,” Kubiak said. “Our players are learning how to compete each and every play. That’s the good part of the growth this year.”
Otsego actually trailed 21-10 until Callaway hauled in a 3-yard scoring pass from Eldred with 2:07 remaining, cutting the deficit to 21-16.
A successful onside kick gave the ball back to Otsego, which got the 8-yard scoring pass from Eldred to Callaway for the game-winner.
Callaway also had a 4-yard TD reception from Eldred to give him three for the game.
Eldred finished 13-of-29 passing for 182 yards. Jacob Sallee joined Callaway with multiple receptions, catching three passes for 34 yards. Ashton Atwater had one catch for 27 yards and Owen Watson had one catch for six yards.
Owen Grile connected on a 21-yard field goal to open the scoring for Otsego.
“This was a good win,” Kubiak said. “Now we have to continue to get better each week and build off this win.”
