Commercial Record harvests six state press awards

Editor Scott Sullivan won first place out of nine entries for his News Photograph of rescuers working to save a man involved in a winter car crash. “The first place winner,” judges wrote, “rose to the top with a well-composed photo that shows some urgency on the part of the emergency personnel trying to free the accident victim.” Sullivan also won best in state for his Sports Photograph of Saugatuck High’s Blake Dunn taken while winning the Division 4 state 110 hurdles championship. “Captures emotion, good stop action, lineup of hurdles adds without distracting,” judges said of the shot, titled “Springing for the stars.”

The Commercial Record won six awards, including two bests in state, in the 2015 Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest announced last week.

The Saugatuck-Douglas newspaper competed as a Class D weekly in the state contest, judged by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association. The PNA reviewed 3,833 entries submitted by 113 Michigan newspapers.
