The Interurban carried more than 13,000 passengers in the first five months of operation. Since then, it has carried more than 1,549,500 passengers in a 5,100-resident community and now travels close to 160,000 miles per year.

The Interurban Transit Authority will celebrate its 35th birthday serving cake, ice cream and coffee Friday, May 8, in the offices of all three local governments it serves.

Festivities will take place at Douglas City Hall from 10 to 11 a.m., Saugatuck City Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Saugatuck Township Hall from 1 to 2 p.m.

The Interurban will also offer free backpacks, clip magnets, post-it notes and coloring books while supplies last.  All rides for the day will cost 35 cents.
