Saugatuck Township, county will have new leaders

More than half of county-wide offices will have new faces come November. The only contested race for a nomination, however, is for the clerk-register of deeds. There, former state Rep. Bob Genetski of Saugatuck and county commissioner Jon Campbell of Otsego will square off in the August GOP primary to replace Joyce Watts, who will retire after 40 years in that post. No Democrats filed for county office. All the remaining candidates are Republicans as well.

Saugatuck Township will have a new supervisor and trustee come November, and Allegan County will replace its longtime clerk, sheriff and prosecutor.

April 19 was the partisan filing deadline.

Saugatuck Township

Republicans Jon Phillips and Randy Brink joined Democrat Jon Helmrich filing to replace 10-year township supervisor Bill Wester, who is not seeking re-election.

Brink, the area’s county commissioner from 2004 to 2006 and Phillips, elected township four years ago, will square off in the Aug. 2 GOP primary. The winner will face Helmrich, who ran unsuccessfully against Wester in 2012, in the general election Nov. 8.
