Merren’s bat helps lift Hopkins to doubleheader sweep over Allegan
Lexi Merren was the star of stars on Hopkins’ softball field on Monday, May 18.
“Lexi obviously had a big day,” said Viking coach Casey Schoenborn after her club recorded 17-2 and 12-1 non-league victories over Allegan.
Merren, a hard-hitting third baseman, connected for a pair of home runs. The two dingers were her sixth and seven of the season.
Merren, who also ripped two doubles, is happy about the way she and her young teammates have jelled.
“We get along great and enjoy the time we have together on and off the field,” Merren said.
The Vikings have won 16 games this spring, adding to the enjoyment.
“You always have a lot more fun when you win,” Schoenborn said.
Despite the two setbacks, first-year Allegan coach Dan Lang is not giving up on his team, which has one win for the season.
“We have a lot of new kids and are struggling, but we’re not giving up,” Lang said. “We’ve been in several games and play hard.”
Kaitlyn McKee collected two hits in the second game for Allegan.
Lang also liked the way some of his other players swung the bat, in particular Darian Guile and Jordyn Maka.
“We’re trying to build a good program,” Lang said. “It might not show it with our record, but we’re making progress.”
