Saugatuck ruled the day at the SAC Track and Field Championships, as both the boys’ and girls’ teams easily won league titles. The conference championship was the first for the boys’ squad.

Saugatuck boys, girls capture league track championships

With a Division 4 state championship and multiple regional titles to its credit, the Saugatuck boys’ track team has experienced the height of success.
But one honor remained missing from the Indians’ resume: a SAC championship.
Saugatuck remedied that situation on Thursday, May 22, amassing 152 points at the SAC Track and Field Championship in Lawton to outdistance runner-up Watervliet by 26 points.
The girls’ championship also went to Saugatuck, as the Indians racked up 147.5 points to finish comfortably ahead of Watervliet (108.5).
For Saugatuck boys’ coach Rick Bauer, the championship filled a void in the program
“It really means a lot to me and the entire coaching staff,” Bauer said. “When I came in, we were near the bottom of the league. We were a one-dimensional team. We were good at distance but not much else.
“Now, we’re very well rounded. We scored in every event but two (the long jump and the 100-meter dash). There was a time when we only scored in two events.”
