Small Business Saturday asks us to shop local

This year is the tenth anniversary of the Shop Small Saturdays concept.

It began as a response to the big box stores holding their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving night and the early hours of the next day. American Express, credited for creating the concept, was beginning to expand its market into the smaller retail stores and wanted to do something to support what they described as “the backbone of the American economy.

The marketing scheme worked well. Instead of standing in long lines while waiting for the doors to open, or participating in the stampede through the big box chain stores, people could have the personal service in independent shops.
