Wayland softball secures district title

The Wayland softball team officially began the defense of its Division 2 state championship with district action in Allegan on Saturday, June 4.
And a good start it was.
After posting a 15-1 victory over Allegan in the district semifinals, the 10th-ranked Wildcats upended Lakewood 9-2 in the title game to advance to regional play.
The district championship was the eighth straight and 21st overall for Wayland.
Abby Merice pitched both games for the Wildcats.
Wayland will take on Forest Hills Eastern in the first of two regional semifinals at Hope College on Saturday, June 11. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
The second semifinal features Unity Christian against fourth-ranked Spring Lake with a scheduled start time of 1:30 p.m.
The winners of the two semifinals will square off for the regional championship at approximately 4 p.m.
