Allegan native buys County News, sister papers

Scott Sullivan, Staff Writer

The Allegan County News has a new owner.

Kaechele Publications Inc., which purchased the 150-year-old local weekly in 1982, has sold it and its sister publications to Wilcox Newspapers LLC.

Mike Wilcox, who was born in Allegan, and his wife, Teresa, own two other Michigan weeklies, the Clare County Review and Marion Press, plus the LaFayette Sun in Alabama.

Mike’s father, Richard Wilcox, was an Allegan High School graduate who went on to publish the Ortonville County Line Reminder.

“I swore I wouldn’t go into the business,” said Mike Wilcox, who, sure enough, did so anyway after graduation from Alma College.

He has owned close to 30 weekly newspapers, almost all in Michigan, through the years.

Kaechele owners Cheryl and Walt Kaechele plan to “retire actively.”

“Each newspaper,” Cheryl Kaechele said, “belongs to its community. Publishers are caretakers who must respect and reflect that community.

“All citizens should have a voice.

Wilcox said, “I am very proud to be the new publisher here.

“I hope I can carry on the award-winning, great tradition Cheryl and Walt have had.”
